Minecraft block switcher thing (light switch)

This post will tell you how to make a block switcher in Minecraft with pistons, basically it will remove a block from a wall, and replace it with another block. This can be used with glowstone to make an effective light that you can turn on and off.

First you'll need to start with 2 normal pistons and one sticky piston, spaced out like this.

The sticky piston needs to be connected to a repeater and also a block with a redstone torch on, this block will act as a NOT gate so that the piston remains extended.

Now you need to dig a hole directly in front of each normal piston and one block underneath. You need a repeater directly under the piston which will send charge up to the block behind. The block which the repeater is sending a charge to needs to have redstone dust on top to activate the piston.

You need 2 more repeaters pointing towards the holes in the ground, this will not activate the Redstone wire directly but if there is a block above it, it will activate the block and the charge will be passed down, this is so that only the required piston is activated.

You can now wire everything up like shown below, and connect it to a button. It must be a button.

Make sure the 2 pieces of Redstone dust behind the pistons are not accidentally connected to any power source. You can now add the 2 blocks of your choice, put one on the sticky piston and one on any of the other 2 pistons.

Your block switcher thing is now complete! Press the button and the 2 blocks will switch places.

I can't sleep with such a bright light!
Good thing I had that light switch installed!

  1. Glowstone is a 'transparent' block so it does not transmit signals... this in 1.1 does not work. Also the NOT gate breaks down.. the torch goes off.

  2. i got it to push one way, but it wouldn't go back the other way

  4. This doesn't work with any transparent block such as glass or glowstone, and so does not suit my needs. Nice tutorial, but not what I was looking for.

  5. I solved this problem, the repeaters on each side of the sticky piston and the one redstone must be one block down to connect to the redstone, the repeaters below the regular pistons have to have a delay level 3 (repeaters delay works 0,1,2,3; zero being how it stands and three being the last), now have a block on outside in the middle redstone, after that place a button on each block, the contraption will not work with just 1 must have two. Oh the repeaters on each side of the sticky can be left @ zero.
